I do remember those days when I am having my first child and my parents told me fruits to eat during pregnancy for fair baby which I thought is a myth.

Counting down the days until the big day, you can’t help but wonder if what they say is true and how will my baby look like?  Will he have light hair? What color may her eyes be? Will he or she have dark or fair skin?

Out of curiosity, I go into more research from other mummy forums, it seems like different moms have different expectations. Some may want their baby to have a fair complexion while others may not find it necessary. At birth, a baby’s skin color will range from dark red to purple. This will change as soon as the baby begins to inhale air. The color will then change to red. The redness is normal during the first day. You will notice that the redness will start to fade in the following days.

This bluish discoloration should disappear in the following days. Take note, however, that bluish complexion on other parts of the body isn’t normal. Check with your doctor immediately.

Participants who consumed fruits and vegetables showed a golden skin tone that exuded radiance and health. Meanwhile, participants whose diet went the other way had dull complexities. 

The takeaway of the study is that a good diet can improve skin color and improve one’s overall health. 

But is this also the case during pregnancy?

Genetics plays a major role in how a baby’s skin complexion would look like. It’s a more complicated science than we thought. Because of this, foods that you eat during pregnancy may have little to do with how your baby’s skin will turn out. The research on the best foods to eat to influence a baby’s skin inside the womb is limited. 

What we do know is that some foods, in general, are known to help enhance your baby’s skin during your pregnancy, making it radiant and healthy.

Different countries and cultures have their say at the right fruits to consume to have a fair-skinned baby. Some of these may be myths; some may have science on their side. Whatever the case is, a healthy and balanced diet makes an overall healthy baby.

Saffron is believed to improve a baby’s complexion and make it fairer while in the womb. Because of this, some expectant mothers drink saffron milk during pregnancy. This belief is common in India and in some parts of the globe. 

While pregnant women need calcium and protein in their diet, drinking saffron-infused milk can have its limitations. Saffron can give off heat and may cause the uterus to contract. Because of this, doctors may advise to only consume it within the third trimester. 

Cherries and Berries 

Strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries are excellent sources of antioxidants. This makes them great fruits to consume to help prevent premature ageing. Antioxidants also work by reducing the harmful effects caused by free radicals to the body. 

Fatty Fish 

 

Deep-sea fatty fish like salmon, sardines, and tuna are enriched with omega-3 fatty acids. These essential fatty acids are responsible for repairing cell membranes. In turn, these enhance a baby’s skin elasticity, making it plump and supple.

Avocado 

Pregnant women can head to their nearest supermarket and grab some avocado while they can. Avocado is enriched with vitamins C and E—both known for their antioxidant properties. Vitamin C, in particular, helps reduce inflammation and helps the body in producing collagen. Collagen, as we know it, promotes skin elasticity and may contribute to enhancing your baby’s skin tone. 

Tomato 

Here’s another antioxidant to add to your book—lycopene. This essential nutrient is usually found in tomatoes, making them a great fruit to consume during pregnancy. Lycopene has been linked to numerous health benefits. For mothers, it promotes heart health. And when the heart is healthy, you won’t ever find the need to use medical oxygen sensors to help you breathe. 

Lycopene is also linked to offer some protection against UV rays. Its skin-protecting ability leads us to believe that it can make your baby’s skin stronger and healthier while in the womb.
